South Carolina v North Carolina State Under 53

The South Carolina Gamecocks and true sophomore quarterback Jake Bentley received their share of off-season publicity as many ‘experts’ forecast marked improvement for the program in Year Two of Will Muschamp’s tenure. While the Gamecocks may flirt with a .500 record and qualify for a bowl for a second straight season, a closer look shows the SEC middle feeder was far from prolific offensively last season against the better clubs on their schedule.

Against the eight eventual bowl teams it faced during the regular season, South Carolina averaged just 12.7 points and 289.3 total yards. The Gamecocks scored more than 14 points against only one of those opponents. With a year of experience and 10 offensive starters returning, the Gamecocks are almost certain to be improved on that side of the ball. But it may not show against NC State which boasts one of the nation’s top defensive fronts and could make some serious noise in the ACC’s Atlantic Division this season. Look for NC State defensive ends Bradley Chubb and Kentavius Street to make their presence felt Saturday in Charlotte, N.C.
