College Football Free Pick of the Week by Paul Stone

Texas El Paso +30.5 over Texas  On an opening weekend filled with nail-biting finishes and Top 10 upsets, Texas’ 50-47 victory over fellow college football blueblood Notre Dame in double overtime was perhaps the pinnacle.

Absent from the preseason rankings, the Longhorns catapulted all the way to No. 11 in the Associated Press’ poll this week on the heels of the Sunday night victory. Pollsters, like sports bettors, tend to overreact.

Can UTEP Keep Things Somewhat Close vs Texas?

Can UTEP Keep Things Somewhat Close vs Texas?

Texas may indeed be “back” among college football’s royalty sometime this season, but a single win over a good (but not great) Notre Dame team returning a total of eight starters from last season does not constitute such a designation.

“One game does not make a season,” Texas head coach Charlie Strong said after the win. “Let’s make sure we don’t all of the sudden start feeling good about ourselves and then we lose our confidence.”

With Texas still basking in the afterglow of Sunday’s dramatic victory, the Miners will not merit the Longhorns’ full attention. California waits on deck for the Longhorns, with Big XII contests against Oklahoma State and Oklahoma looming on the horizon after the Golden Bears.

Take Texas El Paso and the 30.5 points in a game which should be closer than many are predicting.
