BIG GAME IN VEGAS

This year’s Nevada sports book betting handle was $138.5 million – a 4.5% uptick from last year and the largest handle ever for the Super Bowl. Sports books made a profit of just under $11 million. Under the total of 59 was a popular bet that seemed to help sports books out with the game going into OT and proceeding to go over the total. I helped the sports book’s cause with my Falcons money line ticket, however I did well with several props so not all was lost on Super Bowl Sunday.

HOOTERS CASINO RENOVATIONS GOOD NEWS FOR THE SPORTS BOOK

Hooters Hotel and Casino tucked away just off-strip behind the Tropicana is planning a multi-million dollar renovation to its casino, which will also include the William Hill sports book doubling in size. Smart move by Hooters and the William Hill sports book should be a great option for those staying at MGM or Tropicana, where odds/lines/parlays are usually less enticing than what William Hill run sports books offer.

GOLD COAST SPORTS BOOK NEWS

One of the cool things about the Gold Coast sports book is that it still maintains its old school vibe while keeping its open and bright feel. Problem now is that they have blown out about 30 desk seats on one side of the sports book. No word yet if this will stay that way. It’s still a decent sized book, but the seating availability has always been limited due to the number of horseplayers that frequent the Gold Coast. Head scratcher.

WEBSITE ISSUES

The Vegas Parlay went off of the grid and was lost in cyberspace for a period of time this past Tuesday. The site was completely down and when I finally got the help I needed from the website hosting company I use, several months of content had disappeared. It could have been worse – fortunately this occurred after Super Bowl.

FAREWELL DUPARS

The morning after Super Bowl, the group of friends I was with in Vegas had breakfast at DuPars before heading back to Southern California. Little did I know that this would be the last time I would have breakfast there. 24-hours later, the Twittersphere lit up with tributes to DuPars, which had abruptly closed its doors. I feel bad that I won’t be able to sit at the counter enjoying a great breakfast while looking over the sports odds sheets for the day. I feel worse that the really nice staff there lost their jobs. Some of those folks had been there for years. Farewell DuPars.

Today’s Pick

Florida State is currently 30-1 at the Westgate Super Book and 25-1 at William Hill sports books to win the NCAA Basketball Championship. There’s value at those odds.
