March Madness In Las Vegas Opening Day

March Madness in Las Vegas Opening Day – Facebook and the “twittersphere” is in complete overdrive with pictures, stories, and reports from day one of March Madness in Vegas. Here’s a few quick hits on day one observations:

March Madness in Las Vegas = Expensive Rooms – Those that procrastinated in booking a room are paying the price – literally. Rates for Friday and Saturday have shot up to scary levels – for example, a 3-star spot like the Excalibur will cost you over $500 when resort fees and taxes are rolled in.

The Wynn – A nice discovery by a member of the March Madness in Las Vegas Facebook group was the set up at The upscale Wynn. The Wynn didn’t do much to promote their March Madness set up but by the look of the picture, it was a great spot to catch  the tip off to the tournament. Admission to the theater is free and by the looks of it, not a lot of folks knew about it…but the secret is out!

Monte Carlo – The Pub is a popular spot amongst the March Madness in Las Vegas crowd, however one poor soul either indulged a bit too much or was made sick by a tough loss on his parlay card. Regardless, we feel for you brother and hope that you are good to go for day two!

Also at The Monte Carlo, reports on Facebook from the new Double Barrel Roadhouse weren’t stellar. Long waits for drinks were reported.

Cosmopolitan – Reviews continue to be good for Cosmo’s Hoops and Hops set up. The screens look great and seating is also nice (and even better if you fork out the dough for the VIP admission). Plus, with Holsteins Shakes & Buns nearby, how can you go wrong?

The D – The kickoff party for the March Madness in Facebook group was at The D, where the set up was comfortable with good seating available. This is another good spot where you don’t have to spend a fortune to go with a group and find good seating and cheap drinks/food. There are also blackjack and craps games set up for those that want to try their luck at the tables.

The LVH – As expected, The LVH was one of the more popular spots for March Madness. With ample prop bets and the Hoops Central party in the theater with bargain priced drinks and beer, the usual big cowds descended on the off-strip property. Another big crowd is expected on Friday, but the crowds get a tad easier to deal with on Saturday and Sunday.

The SouthPoint – Crowds were lively as usual at this popular spot with good reviews of their sports book and ballroom setups. The SouthPoint is always a good option and for some, worth the $25 cab ride from the strip.

Other spots on the strip that reported long lines and big crowds include MGM (hint – The Tropicana sports book next door is less crowded). Aria, where there was some reported problems on Friday morning with some testy situations regarding seat saving. Lagasse’s Stadium at Palazzo is sold out as usual – standing room only.

A special thanks to Barry I. and the rest of the March Madness in Las Vegas Facebook Group for access to pictures and information. If you haven’t joined this fantastic group – you should!
