Best Las Vegas Sports Books – A Visit to the Mirage
There are a lot of options for watching sports in Las Vegas and this past Sunday for the FIFA World Cup final was no different. Virtually all of the casino bars in town were showing the game and several properties were hosting watch parties – The Wynn, Cosmopolitan, and LVH to name few.
After a morning session playing some ponies and placing some MLB and World Cup bets at the LVH/Westgate Super Book, I decided to head to the strip – The Mirage specifically as I hadn’t hit the sports book there in a while. I took a $5 monorail ride to the new LINQ entertainment/shopping district near Harrah’s and The Quad (right where the giant High Roller observation wheel is located). It was approximately 105 degrees outside so I stumbled into the cool air conditioning of the new O’Sheas, which is nicely done but is nothing like the old spot on the strip. With a $3 ice cold draft in hand from O’Sheas, I made my way across the street to The Mirage.
As usual, The Mirage was packed and the sports book was pretty much standing room only 30 minutes prior to kickoff of the World Cup final between Argentina and Germany. The crowd was fantastic and aside from the Super Bowl and the opening weekend of March Madness, I had never experienced this type of atmosphere at the sports book.
The Mirage sports book staff handled the large crowd very well. The place is run well and is in pristine condition, which is impressive for a sports book that is over 25 years old. I made a few horse racing bets prior to kickoff and I was rewarded with a stack of drink tickets – enough to last the entire game (I left several tickets behind for someone else to enjoy). And yes. I always tipped the ticket writer a buck or two.
The giant SONY 4K HD screens the Mirage installed about 18 months ago in the sports book were impressive and it was a great way to watch the World Cup. My money was on the underdog – Argentina, but alas, Messi and the gang fell short. Regardless, it was a great time and The Mirage sports book should always be at the top of your list if you are planning to visit one of the sports books towards the north end of the Vegas strip.
