Super Bowl in Las Vegas 2014 – A Look Back at Big Game Weekend in Vegas

Super Bowl in Las Vegas – Postscript

Super Bowl 48 festivities arrived in Las Vegas this past weekend and with it came a record-breaking day for Las Vegas sports books and enormous crowds all over town. Experiencing the excitement of Las Vegas for the “Big Game” is something every football fan should experience. Aside from actually going to the stadium and watching the Super Bowl live, there is no better place than Sin City for catching the big game. I spent the weekend in Vegas with a group of childhood friends – I’m still recovering, but it was a fantastic experience…..blowout or not.

Here are a few thoughts on this past Super Bowl weekend in Vegas…..

The Big Game in Las Vegas is more popular than ever: Super Bowl weekend room rates were higher than in past years. Chinese New Year may have contributed to that a bit as well. The lines to bet on the Super Bowl that I observed at several sports books around town were all long throughout the weekend. Also, as many anticipated, Nevada sports books scored a record handle on the Super Bowl with nearly $120 million bet on the game.

Sin City was packed: Sunday night could have easily been a Saturday on a holiday weekend as there were big crowds everywhere. Our group spent some time at the Golden Gate Downtown (the casino action was fantastic) on Sunday night and the place was jumping for sure. The Strip was just as nuts – Planet Hollywood had a huge crowd on Saturday night and the “Playing Field” Sports Book was very busy mid-evening.

I still don’t know how LVH does it – A sports book staffer at The LVH confirmed to me that this was by far, the biggest crowd that they have seen at the property for a Super Bowl. Between the sports book, Big Game Central in the theater, and a party held by local Italian Restaurant Casa di Amore in the convention hall, the amount of humanity at the LVH on Sunday was impressive. What is more impressive is the how the LVH staff handled the huge crowd. Kudos to Jay Kornegay, Rosemary Rocco and the rest of their team at The LVH.

The line on Broncos vs Seahawks – Sports books did not budge on the Broncos -2.5 but those supporting Denver were paying the price as extra juice was tacked on if you were going with Peyton Manning’s squad. Broncos -2.5 with -115 and -120 juice was the norm all weekend at sports books around town.

The Betting Side – Our Selection on the Free Pick page of the Seattle Seahawks +2.5 was a winner. Furthermore, the prop plays that were given were successful as we went 2 for 2 and a push. Hope you were on them!

Free parties getting harder to find – Free parties on The Strip are non-existent so you will have to venture out from the main drag a bit to find Super Bowl events without cover charges. Doing so however may lead you to discover other casino resorts that cater well to their customers (see below).

Orleans – Our group spent a chunk of Saturday afternoon at The Orleans Sports Book  in order to lay some money down on the ESPN Insider Super Bowl prop bet, that I was lucky enough to win. Bob Scucci, who runs the Orleans sports book indicated that the ESPN Insider prop was the most bet prop in the history of the contest. Never thought I’d say this, but I’m happy that I made the sports book some money! We decided to stay quite a bit longer as we took in horse racing and college basketball action. Great sports book, friendly staff, and the free drink tickets were easy to come by. I’d have no problem spending more time here on a future trip – great place and the casino is very lively.
