Las Vegas Sports Books – The Free Drink Game

Las Vegas sports books are not only some of the best places to watch your favorite sporting event, but they are also one of the best places to score free drinks in Las Vegas. As popular as Las Vegas sports books have become, free or comped drinks are a little harder to come by compared to as little as 5 years ago. Back in the good old days, simply sitting in a Las Vegas sports book seat all but guaranteed a free morning coffee during the first race at Saratoga or a cold beer during Monday Night Football.

Things have changed as scoring free drinks at a Las Vegas sports book has become a tad more challenging, but there are still many casinos where getting free drinks at the sports book is a breeze.

Despite things getting a bit tighter over the past few years, there are still many options for getting free drinks at Las Vegas sports books. However, there are also a few variables to consider:

–Horse racing bets will always get you more drink tickets. The casino take on horse racing is higher.

–During the busy season (football, March Madness), drink ticket distribution become a little tighter.

–Tipping. If you tip, your chances of getting drink tickets at a Las Vegas sports book go up exponentially.

The most important variable of course, is what Las Vegas sports book you visit. Long gone are the days where Las Vegas sports books hand out free drink tickets like business cards at a networking luncheon, however, you can still do quite nicely at the following spots.

In no particular order….

Harrah’s – Harrah’s sports book could very well be the best place on the strip to score free drinks. Another plus is the connected bar so you don’t need to walk very far to grab a refreshment with your drink tickets. Recently, I tipped the ticket writer a $5 two-team parlay. That was enough to open the floodgates as far as drink tickets were concerned as I received several free drink tickets throughout the afternoon/evening every time I hit the sports book window.

Westgate Super Book – Westgate was one of the last Vegas sports books to go the drink ticket route. That didn’t matter too much as drink tickets here are still pretty easy to come by as long as you get the right ticket writer and throw a buck or two their way. Even without a tip, many times the staff here will ask if you want a drink ticket once you make a bet. The minimum of $50 posted for a free drink ticket is loosely followed.

Fremont – Downtown spots like the Golden Nugget and the various William Hill locations (The D, Plaza, Binions, Downtown Grand) are all hit and miss with drink ticket distribution. However, the Fremont sports book does a good job with handing out drink tickets to their race and sports players. Be friendly and tip and you should be good to go at this smaller sports book.

SouthPoint – The SouthPoint sports book is still one of the best places in town to score free drinks while at the sports book. Out of my several visits here, there was one outlier when I was told I had to make a minimum bet and I didn’t score a drink ticket. That only happened once as every other visit was good from a drink ticket standpoint. Just know that the ticket writers face that shut me down is etched in my memory and now I always avoid that counter.

Flamingo – Similar to Harrah’s, the ticket writers are friendly and can be very generous with drink tickets when you tip. Actually, very generous as they will take care of you even on busy sports days. The Flamingo sports book isn’t the flashiest of spots on the Vegas strip, but it’s at the top of the list when it comes to getting comped drinks.

TI – Sports book managers, not the ticket writers, hand over free drink tickets here. All you do is walk over to them and ask while having your sports bet tickets visible. They usually hand over a couple of drink tickets without any issues or questions. Only drawback here is that there is not a bar nearby so you are at the mercy of the servers and how often they hit the sports book to take drink orders. It’s hit and miss from that standpoint.

Mirage – The Mirage is above average when it comes to free drink tickets. However, managers tend to lurk behind ticket writers and when they do, getting a drink ticket can be tough. So, hit a window without a sports book manager hovering in the background and with a small tip, you’ll be good to go. Servers come by often and the sports book bar at the rear of the space will also accept your drink ticket.

Gold Coast – The Gold Coast is more of a horse racing spot for locals, but they are still pretty generous with the drink tickets even for sports bets. Recently, I spent time at the Gold Coast betting horses and had no problem getting drink tickets when I took a pause from the ponies to make a modest $30 baseball bet.
