Nebraska -21.5 over Southern Mississippi (ESPN Noon Eastern)
Nebraska and first-year head coach Mike Riley enter Saturday’s non-conference matchup against Southern Mississippi with wounded egos after last week’s spirited comeback at Miami (Fla.) fell short in overtime.
The Cornhuskers trailed, 33-10, with nine minutes remaining before rallying to tie the game on Tommy Armstrong’s fourth touchdown pass of the game and the ensuing two-point conversion with just 33 seconds left. Armstrong, however, tossed his third interception of the game in overtime, and Miami’s Michael Badgley subsequently kicked a 28-yard field goal as the Hurricanes hung on for a 36-33 victory.
Nebraska, which lost to BYU on a Hail Mary on the game’s final play in its season opener, is two plays from being undefeated at 3-0. Instead, the Cornhuskers are 1-2 and looking to vent their frustrations against a somewhat overmatched opponent.
Southern Miss, playing its second straight road game this week, gave up 50 points, 591 yards and 29 first downs in last week’s 56-50 victory over Texas State.
The Golden Eagles are just what the doctor ordered from the Cornhuskers’ perspective. Expect Nebraska and quarterback Tommy Armstrong to roll to a big victory and lay the 21.5 points.
