College Football Selections Week 2 (Free Picks)

***Virginia -10 vs Illinois     ***Over 55

Virginia was a perfect 5-0 ATS at home last season and they continued that ATS streak with a cover at home vs William and Mary this past Saturday. Things get tougher this week vs Illinois, however Virginia should be able to score plenty vs an Illini defense that has given up 445 points (average) in the first two games of the season. It gets no easier for the Illinois defense as they hit the road and face a strong offensive line, which sets the table for Bruce Mendenhall’s Cavalier offense. My money is on Virginia -10 here and a play on the OVER 55 (Westgate SuperBook) is also acceptable.

***Liberty -4 at Troy

Over the past 2 seasons, Liberty is a perfect 5-0 ATS the week after a blowout win (20+ points). The Flames handled Campbell last week by a score of 48-7, which sets up the trend nicely this Saturday vs Troy. Troy has not done well as of late in home non-conference games – failing to cover the spread in 9 of their last 10. Troy does have a decent defense, but I just do not see the Trojans from Alabama causing severe problems for QB Malik Willis and Liberty’s video game offense, with a bunch of returners, who averaged nearly 40 points per game last season.

***Middle Tennessee State +20 at Va Tech

There’s a strong chance of a let-down situation for the Hokies here after the emotional win vs N Carolina at a once-again rocking Lane Stadium last week. On top of that, Va Tech travels 4 hours up the road to West Virginia next week for the Black Diamond Trophy game. I don’t think HC Justin Fuente will want to let too many cats out of the bag offensively ahead of the West Virginia match up. I anticipate a conservative offensive approach here for the Hokies and it would not surprise to see QB Braxton Burmeister stay near the stat line he had last week: 12/19 with 169 passing yards. Burmeister has thrown for over 200 yards only once in his 4 years of college football. Arguably, the better QB will be on the visitor’s sideline on Sunday – NC State transfer Bailey Hockman is solid. Take the points with the underdog here.

Late add: Appalachian State +8.5:   Appy State has covered 3 of their last 4 games as a road  underdog. They keep things close vs Miami…+8.5 is a nice number here.
