Las Vegas Sports Book News – This Year in The NFL, the Underdog is King

A few weeks ago, Vegas books made a killing with the Seahawk’s upset win vs. The Packers on the disputed Monday Night Football play. Although the controversial finish to the game doomed the replacement refs, it certainly did the opposite for Vegas sports books as a reported 80% of all money bet on the game was on the Packers to cover the -3 point spread. Green Bay, of course, didn’t cover, which resulted in millions of dollars for Vegas books.
This past week in the NFL, it started out on Thursday with the Titans pulling off the upset, beating the Steelers outright as 5-point underdogs. Also during this past week’s NFL action, not many people saw the Raiders giving the undefeated Falcons much of a challenge as the Silver and Black almost won outright and easily covered the +10 line. Those are just two examples of upset wins this past week. As Micah Roberts reports in a recent Sporting News article, favorites went 2-11 against the spread in week 6 of the NFL. If you are an underdog player, last week was very profitable.
Will underdogs continue to get the job done? Vegas sports books hope so as the public, regardless of the spread, always leans towards betting favorites with the old standby QBs: Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, etc. As far as betting goes however, guys like Russell Wilson and Sam Bradford have been helping sports bettors cash winning tickets so far this NFL season.
