The NFL is the ultimate reality show and the circus-like ending to the Monday Night Football game between the Seahawks and Packers proved that point. The controversial finish had a substantial bearing on millions of dollars bet on the game, not to mention fantasy football owners who had the Packers D or Golden Tate in their starting line ups. As for Las Vegas sports books, it was reported pre-game that around 80% of the action going into kickoff was on Green Bay – a huge ratio even for the usually well-bet Lombardis.
One can only imagine the scene at the many sports bars and sports books around Vegas and not to mention the “virtual” explosion from those with money on the game via Twitter. The Wynn sports book was not a happy place for the fans as the majority of sports bettors catching MNF there let out a collective groan as the Seahawks TD stood. Darren Rovell of ESPN reports that an LVH sports book manager indicated that the call “shifted $15 million in Nevada alone.” Mandalay Bay reported that they took in around half a million dollars on the game, with the majority of that cash riding on the Packers.
It was a big night publicity-wise for the NFL (good or bad is up to you), and a nice win for those of you fortunate enough to have bet the Seahawks +3.5 or on the money line – congratulations by the way. As for the sports books in Vegas, well, they made millions off of a blown call and a play that all football fans won’t soon forget. So, next time you’re sitting at a Vegas sports book, don’t feel too guilty about the complimentary racing form or ordering the free mocha or bloody mary in the morning while mulling over the parlay cards and odds sheets.
