Boxing, Kentucky Derby, NBA & NHL Playoffs – Big Weekend for Las Vegas Sports Books

Boxing, Kentucky Derby, NBA & NHL Playoffs – Big Weekend for Las Vegas Sports Books

There is no NCAA or NFL football for several months. March Madness wrapped up weeks ago. So what could possibly be happening at a Las Vegas sports book this Cinco De Mayo Weekend? Well, plenty!

 NHL & NBA Playoffs

NHL and NBA playoffs have been particularly exciting this year and both will ramble on this weekend as the intensity of the games matched with action at the sports book is hard to beat. The Miami Heat remain odds on favorites to win the NBA Championship at 3-2 odds (bet $20 to win $30). As far as the Stanley Cup goes, the Blackhawks are odds on at 4-1 (that number will surely drop if they jump out to a series lead vs. The Wild). Ah, but there is much more going on this weekend. Specifically, championship boxing and the Kentucky Derby.

Boxing – Mayweather vs. Maidana

Floyd Mayweather is coming off of a victory which saw him at the best odds available for his backers in a very long time. Mayweather was a -260 favorite at most Vegas spots and he made that number look like a gift as he dismantled a worthy opponent in Canelo Alvarez. For this weekend’s fight vs. Marcos Maidana, Mayweather is a huge favorite, and you’ll have to lay a lot to win a little.

The LVH Super Book has Mayweather listed at -1200 (bet $120 to win $10) and if you want to back Maidana, you’ll get odds of +750 ($10 to win $75).

LVH Super Book props for Mayweather vs. Maidana:

Kentucky Derby

Although horse racing has lost a bit of luster over the years, big horse racing days are still well bet and Las Vegas sports books should see plenty of betting action on this year’s “Run for the Roses.” Many off-strip spots – Gold Coast, Orleans, SouthPoint to name a few, will have special areas within the casino open for Kentucky Derby parties. Some casino sports books even serve up mint juleps for the occasion. The Derby doesn’t seem to be as wide open as in past years – California Chrome is a strong favorite in this year’s field of 3-year olds.

If you are a horse racing fan, watching the race in Las Vegas is something you must do at least once. I have experienced several Kentucky Derby runs while in Sin City and the sports book scene and atmosphere is always great for the Derby.
