Kentucky Derby in Vegas

Watching the Kentucky Derby in Vegas is more than mint juleps and showy hats, it’s also a chance for some of the town’s casinos and sports books to get in on the fun of what is called “The Most Exciting 2 Minutes in Sports.”  Of course, Las Vegas isn’t exactly Kentucky, but a few places, on and off the strip, are hosting Kentucky Derby parties on Saturday, May 2. Post time for the Kentucky Derby is at 3:25 Las Vegas (Pacific) time but all of the Kentucky Derby in Vegas parties will start several hours prior.

This is not the type of list you’d find for Super Bowl or March Madness of course, but whether you are a hard core horse racing fan or just a casual pony bettor, these Kentucky Derby in Vegas events are a lot of fun. And of course, every single sports book in town will be showing the race.

THE STRIP

Venetian (Rockhouse) – $50 guaranteed seating and open bar. Mint Juleps and Kentucky Bourbon are amongst the drink offerings. Mechanical bull and beer pong also available – with an open bar? Dangerous combo! The Rockhouse has 80 High Definition screens and there is a CG Technology race and sports book close by in order to get your betting action in.

Mirage (Sports Book) – The Sports Book Bar will feature $8 mint juleps on Friday & Saturday with your choice of 5 different bourbons (Bulleit, Wild Turkey, Makers Mark, Jim Beam, Woodford Reserve). The Mirage sports book has the best jumbo screen (Sony 4K Ultra HD) on the strip. If you’re betting the ponies, the free drink tickets should be readily available.

OFF STRIP

South Point (Ballroom) – Doors open at 9am and horse players get free drinks (via drink ticket route – South Point is usually very liberal with comped drinks). Food specials and betting stations will be set up in the ballroom. For those up early, the South Point has $1 Bloody Mary and Mimosas at all casino bars from 6 am to Noon.

Stratosphere (Theater) – Doors open at 8:30. The Stratosphere Theater will be showing the horse racing action on 9 screens, with food specials and $15 Bud/Bud Light pitchers. Betting stations will also be available in the theater. Free T-shirt with a $20 wager.

DOWNTOWN

Commonwealth –$25 admission includes one free drink, light bites, photo booth, and brass band. Proceeds go to United Way. The El Cortez sports book is about a 3 minute walk from the Commonwealth.
