The Riviera Hotel and Casino closed its doors for good today. With it comes the exit of one of the 2 William Hill sports book locations along the Las Vegas Strip – the other William Hill sports book with a Las Vegas Boulevard address is located within SLS, at the very northern end of the Las Vegas strip.
The Riviera joins a growing list of historic Las Vegas casinos that have been swept aside for something shinier: The Frontier, Sands, Stardust, and Desert Inn are a few of the spots that continue to fade away after closing their doors and being demolished many years ago . The Stardust holds a special place for many old time Vegas sports bettors as it contained the first “Mega Sports Book” on the strip.
But back to the Riviera, and specifically, the sports book. My recent visits found that the sports book space was never too busy. Other than NFL and College Football weekends, seats were generally available and the William Hill staff were always friendly and willing to have a conversation or answer questions. On occasion, while staying at the Westgate, I would cross Paradise Road and make the leisurely 15 minute walk past the AM/PM and the large, yet underutilized rear parking lot of the Riviera and make my way to the sports book in order to compare odds and lines. While there, I’d always grab a cheap refreshment while looking over the odds sheets.
We will have to see if another William Hill spot shows up on the strip again – it’s nice to have options when shopping for odds or simply having a solid sports book to enjoy, which is typical of William Hill. SLS is a short monorail ride away and of course, Fremont Street has a bevy of William Hill locations, but the Strip could surely use an additional spot or two – especially now with Riviera going away.
