Super Bowl Las Vegas Style
Las Vegas sports books anticipate big crowds in town, as people take advantage of the holiday weekend. Which holiday weekend you ask? Super Bowl weekend of course!
Tens of thousands of sports fans and sports bettors will descend on Las Vegas over the next several days and the action in Las Vegas sports books as well as in casino restaurants and bars will be hot and heavy all weekend – culminating in Super Bowl 47 on Sunday afternoon.
With all of the local sports fans as well as the large number of tourists that will be hitting sports books around town, sports book operators are expecting big numbers both at the betting counters and the registers.
“The record handle for Super Bowl betting occurred in 2006 (Steelers vs. Seahawks) when $94.5 million was wagered on the game state-wide. Nevada sports books came close to breaking that record last year (Giants vs. Patriots), and the activity so far makes it seem that the state–wide handle may (reach record territory) again,” said Jay Kornegay, Sports Book Director at The LVH, which is home to the largest and also one of the best sports book operations in town.
Planning for the biggest sport betting day of the year, including marketing, setting room rates, prepping for big game parties, and preliminary planning for the hundreds of Super Bowl prop bets begins well ahead of time, leading up to the Big Game on February 3rd. “We begin the entire process months in advance,” said Kornegay.
Kornegay also said that visitors are arriving earlier every year for the big game (some arrive as early as Wednesday and make it a week long event). The Action at The LVH and other sports books will be busy all weekend, including higher than usual betting activity across the board on NBA, College Basketball, NHL, and horse racing. So if you are going to bet on the Super Bowl, getting your bet in well ahead of kickoff is probably a good idea as lines at the sports book will increase as game time approaches.
The Vegas Parlay will be reporting from several sports books on both Saturday and Sunday (via Twitter and our Facebook fan page) while in town for the Big Game and The LVH will be “home base” for The Vegas Parlay during most of Super Bowl weekend. We will be attending the screening of the new Las Vegas sports betting documentary Life on the Line on Saturday in The LVH Theater and will bring you all of the big game action, Las Vegas style, on Super Bowl Sunday as well.
A big thank you to Jay Kornegay and his team at The LVH for providing information and feedback for this report.
