MLB Free Picks / Selections for Friday

Marlins at Nationals 7:05 pm Eastern

Nationals starting pitcher Trevor Williams is putting up good strikeout numbers, but he’s been terribly inefficient often pushing the 90 to 100 pitch mark after only 5 or 6 innings – Williams has not pitched more than 6 innings this season and will eventually turn the ball over to a Nationals bullpen that is last in MLB in saves. Although Miami SP Sandy Alcantara comes into this game with a 4.75 ERA, he is still throwing a lot of “swing and miss” stuff and is consistently throwing strikes so far in 2023. The reigning Cy Young award winner also limits home runs, which plays nicely tonight vs a Nationals team that is second-to-last in MLB hitting home runs vs right handed pitchers. His above average swinging strike rate of 12% is also consistent with where he’s been his entire career. I really like Alcantara tonight and I think he’ll take care of business vs a Nationals team who have lost 8 out of 10 and is not hitting.

Bet: Marlins -143 (Circa)

Phillies at A’s 9:40 pm Eastern

Phillies SP Taijuan Walker has a streak of 12 straight innings without allowing an earned run. He’s struck out 13 batters in that stretch. A’s hitters have been striking out at a 23% clip vs righties over the last 21 days and power numbers are headed south. Oakland starter JP Sears is an underrated lefty that should have some success vs Phillies batters that have the highest strikeout number vs. southpaws in all of MLB. I see Sears keeping Phillies batters quiet and if Taijuan Walker gets through the first inning unscathed, the first-five-innings under is live.

Bet: Under 4.5 (first 5 innings)
