A New Vegas Sports Book for Downtown – It’ll Just be Awhile

The Las Vegas Club, the long standing hotel & casino in Downtown Las Vegas which was shuttered over the summer, will indeed have a sports book once renovated. The Las Vegas Club had fallen on hard times before its closure several months ago as the hotel portion of the property was no longer used and the casino area was well…..marginal at best. A sports book has not been operated out of the Las Vegas Club building since approximately 2005 – at the time, it was by far Downtown’s largest sports book.

“A sports book is definitely in the plans for the new hotel & casino,” said Derek Stevens, who acquired the Las Vegas Club property in mid-August 2015 (Stevens is also CEO and co-owner of The D and Golden Gate casinos located on Fremont Street). “As far as how the sports book will be operated, how it will look, and what space is used for the sports book is still to be determined.” Mr. Stevens was nice enough to answer my questions and dozens of more inquiries as he led a tour for over 100 Vegas fanatics in town for VIMFP through the shuttered casino and other nooks and crannies of the property.

A new sports book downtown and overall, a new and upgraded hotel/casino property will be a great addition to Fremont Street. It will be awhile however. Before plans for a sports book take shape, there are some heavy duty issues to tackle with the old Las Vegas Club property. But given that Stevens is big into sports, there are high hopes amongst the growing legion of Las Vegas sports book fans that the newest Downtown Vegas sports book will be worth the wait.
