Kentucky Derby Bettor Wins Big at the Wynn Sports Book

Las Vegas sports books begin to offer up Kentucky Derby future odds 6-months prior to the “Run for the Roses.” Most horses on the future odds sheet never even make it to the race, however hefty odds can be had for betting on a potential Kentucky Derby contender months ahead of the race.

In the days leading up to the Derby, there were reports floating around Las Vegas that a few Kentucky Derby future tickets with big odds were bet on the prohibitive favorite in the race – California Chrome. California Chrome went off at 5/2 odds and scored an impressive victory in the Kentucky Derby as the Cal-Bred started his quest for horse racing’s Triple Crown.

There were a lot of happy folks at Las Vegas sports books as the heavily bet odds on favorite came through with the win. For one particular Las Vegas “local” who took in the race at The Bellagio, the payoff was much higher than 5/2. A local woman who we will call “Ms. Silverman” (her request for anonymity is being honored for this post) was holding a $36 future ticket on California Chrome, which would net a nearly $10,000 payday at a whopping 275-1 odds. The Kentucky Derby future bet was made in January at The Wynn sports book.

“California Chrome looked like a strong horse early on and (my cousin) and I start looking at horses in September. It takes a lot of research,” said Ms. Silverman, who also bet on a few other horses in the race. She added that the process of identifying Kentucky Derby contenders and then hedging bets the day of the race is more “art than science.” With a big score at 275-1 odds, I think most folks would go with Picasso over Einstein any day.

Ms. Silverman is a self-described “small time” bettor who usually bets on March Madness and NFL. As she puts it “I’m a small girl in a big guy’s betting world.” Perhaps, but for at least this past Kentucky Derby Day in Las Vegas, she was big time – holding a winning sports book ticket at whopping odds that many of the big time horse racing handicappers will only dream of ever possessing.
