FIFA World Cup in Las Vegas
A quick look at happenings around Las Vegas sports books during FIFA World Cup “season.”
Costa Rica 50-1 to Win Group D
According to Jay Kornegay who runs the LVH Super Book, there were a few wagers placed on Costa Rica to win Group D (England, Italy, Uruguay) at 40-1 and 50-1 respectively. However, nobody laid the lumber and wagered heavy on the proposition as the live tickets that are out there are small in nature. Even at 50-1 odds, nothing that the sports books will sweat over if Costa Rica ends up winning the group. There certainly will be a few happy Costa Rica backers who will get a great payoff if Costa Rica wins their group, small wager notwithstanding.
Huge Risk Small Return – Relatively Speaking
One particular “chalky” (favorite at low odds) bet made over the weekend certainly may have seemed like easy money , though it was anything but. A Las Vegas bettor who backed prohibitive favorite Argentina in their match vs. Iran wagered $350,000 on the South American team to score a victory.
The bet would provide a less than 10% return on that huge $350,000 investment; $20,000 to be exact. The William Hill sports book location at the off-strip Tuscany Hotel & Casino took the wager. Lionel Messi scored with only about a minute left in the match to give Argentina the 1-0 result, and in the process, helped one very “lucky” World Cup bettor from throwing himself off of the Stratosphere.
According to RJ Bell of Pregame.com, an offshore sports book took 4 different $500 bets on USA to win the world cup at the start of the tournament. The odds at the time were 200-1, which would equal a $100,000 payout. At Las Vegas sports books, the best number on USA winning the World Cup is at the LVH super book, which has Klinsmann’s crew currently listed at 50-1 (was 100-1).
Reports are that Las Vegas sports books are enjoying nice World Cup crowds, which is a good thing given that NFL and college football is still a few months away. The SouthPoint in particular has become somewhat of a hot spot especially during matches involving USA and Mexico. The Fan Cave area of the LVH has been standing room only during big matches, and Book and Stage at Cosmopolitan has also seen nice daytime crowds for taking in the World Cup.
As the end of group play nears and some teams already eliminated, here are updated Las Vegas Sports Book odds to win the World Cup:
